Getting close with the herd of wild dolphins in Kiluan Bay, Lampung

You are definitely like dolphins, aren't you? Marine mammals those are famous of their witty and intellect nature. There are limited locations in Indonesia to watch the herd of wild dolphins directly across the sea and swimming alongside your boat. If you can’t go to Lovina Beach in North Bali to watch them, the nearest location from Jakarta is to go to Kiluan Bay, lampung.


For you info, Kiluan Bay functions as a migration path for two species of dolphin; the bottle-nose dolphin and the spinner dolphin. The number of these amazing marine mammals that pass through the bay is estimated in the thousands, one of the largest number of migrating dolphins in the world !!!... Woow it’s amazing right? I wanted to go there anyway… hehe

After browsing on internet to find out about how to get travelling to Kiluan Bay, finally me and my two friends went to Lampung on August 2014.

We arrived at Raden Inten II Airport in the city of Bandar Lampung on Sunday morning (it took only 25 minutes flight from Soekarno-Hatta airport Jakarta). Our friends who stayed in Bandar Lampung pick us up at the airport by car, and we went on driving directly to Kiluan Bay.  Kiluan  Bay is located in Kelumbayan Village, District of Tanggamus, Lampung Province. It is about 80 km from the city of Bandar Lampung. It took approximately 3-4 hours across the roads because 60 percent of the roads are not in good conditions, so it is advisable to hire a car with good condition and good driver who knows the area.

Despite of inadequate condition roads, the beautiful scenery such as the white sand beach and the stretches of green paddy fields on the left side and the green hills on the right side would help took our mind off the bumpy roads. We stopped for a while in the middle of nowhere… no just kidding, we stopped at the beach named Pantai Sari. Hired a boat to take us off to the middle of the sea, which is called PasirTimbul. What would you do in PasirTimbul?  You could do snorkeling and take some pictures anyway. See all of that we’ve got in PasirTimbul down below:

We continued our driving to Kiluan Bay. We arrived at Tanggamus district at 02.00 pm.

Where would we stay in Kiluan Bay? Accommodations in Kiluan Bay are limited, and homestays are the best way  to stay. We have to order a week before, because on the weekend and holiday season, there’re so many tourists from Jakarta will visit Kiluan Bay. Rates per night are only about 500.000 rupiah per homestay, which can be occupied by 5-6 people.

We stayed at homestay, which is have a style. Getting to our homestay, we have to take a boat from one of the beach in Kelumbayan village to Kiluan beach, approximately 15 minutes to get there. And our homestay is by the beach next to the island called Kelapa Island, which is famous with the beautiful underwater life down there.

Yet another prized possession of the gulf is its wonderful landscape, most beaches in Lampung have its soft white sand and tropical trees.  We enjoyed the fresh air, simply relaxed on the beach and waited for the sunset went down,  yes that’s all we did.

What to do in Kiluan Bay? Watching the living of wild dolphins of course. The best time to see the dolphins is at around 06.00-08.00 am, because of the sea wind and wave still calm and the dolphins show up in their habitat around Kiluan Bay. We rented small boat called “Jukung” that carried a maximum 4 passengers plus 1 guide (boatman).

After having breakfast, the Jukung brought us towards to the middle of the ocean where the dolphins habitat were, and it did take for thirty minutes for us to watch the herd of wild dolphins swam freely. Watching dolphins living free in the wild right away in front of you, swimming alongside your boat was amazing!!  Subhanallah….

The dolphins were very attractive and happy to approach our Jukung, showing to the guests with a friendly welcome. We were all forgetting about the wave that seemed have not be calm anymore.  And it was difficult to take some pictures of the wild dolphins when you couldn’t stand on  your Jukung in the middle of the sea, though. And these are some pictures and video we successfully have got:
